We are proud to pioneer, Pathways to Empowerment a 12-week mind-body program which intertwines Trauma Sensitive Yoga and meditation with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Incident Reduction Therapy, Guided Imaginery, and Art Therapy. It is based on the techniques developed from the collective research of: Bessel van der Kolk MD, at the Trauma Center in Brookline, Ma, Peter A. Levine, PhD, of the Foundation for Human Enrichment and Frank Gerbode, MD, and compiled by Pam O'Brien, CYT and Isie Brindley, LCPC.
This program is for people suffering a condition called Post Traumatic Stress of which the symptoms leave the survivor feeling alienated, isolated, hyper aware and yet "frozen" in the memories of the past. Triggers may cause a flashback as though the person is re-experiencing the traumatic event. Those memories of the traumatic incidents, which have stuck with them, may include the residuals from physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, domestic violence, witnessing violence, combat violence or traumatic brain injury.
The intention of Pathways to Empowerment is to help survivors of trauma 1).Reclaim their connection to their body and emotions; 2.) Teach them skills of how to live more fully in the present; 3.) Learn to make healthy choices: 4.) And learn to self-regulate or care for themselves.
Because it is believed that the "memory" of trauma is held in the cells and tissues of the body, and not just the mind, cognitive therapy alone does not address the root of this condition. There is now evidence through new brain research that trauma negatively impacts several areas of the brain, including Broca's Area. Research shows that the Broca's area, which enables people to express themselves verbally, is smaller in people who've experienced severe trauma. Thus, the muilti-faceted approach Pathways to Empowerment offers has the potential for being most successful treatment for PTSD.
